Knits that hold their line

Cable dresses, sculpted cardigans and a button front that closes cleanly over everything underneath.

The method

Blocked flat, then measured

A knit grows once it relaxes. We let it settle on a form, then measure the garment you will receive rather than the one that came off the machine.

The button stance decides it

A cardigan is only useful if it closes over what you are already wearing. We set the button stance against a fine knit and a heavy knit in turn, then check that the front edge does not pull at the chest or gape at the hip. Ribs are worked at a tighter gauge than the body so that a hem keeps its grip, and every buttonhole is fastened and unfastened repeatedly before approval. The knit is blocked flat for a day and measured after it has relaxed, because the length that comes off the machine is not the length that arrives in a parcel. If a side seam twists, the panel is recut.

How a knit is tested

The dress and the cardigan

A cable sheath for the day, a button-front cardigan for the layer over it.

The close-up: a rib that recovers

The difference between a cardigan that lasts and one that gives up is in the rib. We use a tighter gauge at the cuff and hem, then wash and dry the sample the way a customer would. If the recovery is not there, the gauge is changed before the style is released.

Drafted over a knit

Armhole and button stance are set against a layer underneath, never a bare body.

Rib at a tighter gauge

Cuffs and hems are worked denser so they keep their grip through a season of wear.
